Broken - a Project QUILTING Quilt

The latest Project QUILTING Challenge was "My Complements." We were challenged to feature two complementary colors in our final piece. I'm not going to lie - complementary color combinations aren't necessarily my favorite - they just remind me too much of sports teams! But as you all know - I can't say no to a challenge so I was in!

Instead of deciding on what colors I wanted to use before looking through my stash I brought my trusty color wheel to my stash and chose that way.

I found this fantastic fuchsia and lime green combo that I knew was "it" right away. I also needed a fun textured piece so I pulled that as well.

The colors weren't really inspiring much as far as design-wise in me but I had been wanting to hone my skills in adding super skinny strips into my blocks. So that's just what I did! If you're interested in learning how to do this check out my tutorial on instagram HERE.

I started by making three sets of three blocks with the skinny strips. Because I can never keep things simple ... I decided I wanted to play around a bit with my raw edge applique circle method that I use in my Garden Sprouts quilt. I love it because it uses both parts - the circle and the piece the circle is cut from.

Once I had all nine finished, I realized I needed to make three more blocks and those three I was going to leave with only skinny strips - no circles.

I played around with the layout for a little while and then just sewed it all together.

Next up was quilting which I just played around with some swirly fun.

And lastly - binding. I once again went with a faced binding. This quilt felt like it didn't need a "stop" to it and that's what a traditional binding would have done. It finished at 12" x 16".

Someone commented on my instagram post that the blocks look broken and that's why I decided to make that the name of this piece.

I actually think this might make a really awesome placemat. We'll see though - I might put a hanging sleeve on it yet.

Next Sunday, March 15th at Noon CDT the sixth and final challenge of Season 17 of Project QUILTING will go up on this website. I can't believe it's almost over! These challenges really do help move the winter months along quickly! It's never too late to join in the Project QUILTING fun! Even if you haven't participated in any challenges yet you can always create or the last one.
