A Closer Look, Part 3 – Project QUILTING Challenge Hooray for Spring

I have to say – it wasn’t too long ago that I was wondering if Jared and I would ever have friends…or a life…  Well, it seems like it’s finally happening!  We’re taking the kids over to some friends house for pizza and euchre tonight!  Should be fun!  I think becoming friends on social networks with some of the folks I meet at the orchard during apple season takes the awkwardness out of me calling in January/February and asking if they still want to hang out like we talked about in September!  Anyway – before we go…let’s take a closer look at eight more of the quilts made for the ‘Hooray for Spring’ Project QUILTING Challenge!

Celebrate Spring Purse

for Project Quilting, Season 4, Challenge 6

I started from an inspiration piece of fabric that my parents brought home from Hawaii, making a bright, happy Spring purse.

The applique of the Celebration Flower is done by fusible web and a scribble stitch, which also quilted the flower (only to the batting).

I adapted the pattern to make the purse more my own (gotta have pockets!) and I added a loop to the back so I can hang my keys on the purse (instead of losing them in the bottom of the bag).

I made this quilted purse project in Muskegon, Michigan 🙂

Just Around the Corner

The background fabric reminded me of snow falling – exactly what we had this week! My hopes of spring are the tulips and daffodils pushing their way up through the cold, bare ground. I embellished this whole fabric mini quilt with embroidery stitching and fabric scraps for grass and French knots for flowers. I couched thread around the border. I backed it with fabric that reminds me of a tree full of blossoms and brought it around to the front as a border. It inspired the title with a spring full of blooming flowers “just around the corner.” I made it a double-sided quilt by embroidering tree branches in the midst of the blooms on the back side of the quilt. *I was also inspired by Annie Young’s “The Listening Field”

Made in MI, measures 14 x 9.5″

New Techniques: whole cloth quilt, using fabric scraps to embellish, couching, double sided quilt, embroidery as the focal point

Here is Swing into Spring table runner and it’s my way of welcoming the season to my kitchen! It is approx. 20″ x 36″ and was made in Tucson, Arizona. This is an original design and pattern that used up stash fabric. The floral appliques are fused then machine blanket stitched.

Hello, Spring – Sally’s Angelworks

This week’s challenge had me inspired from several different places! I’m in love with washi tape, although I haven’t splurged on any yet.

In my quilt this week, I wanted to make this fun washi tape look with different patterns in strips just at the bottom of the quilt.

I also used dotted fabric that I got in our Houston Modern Quilt Guild dotted fabric swap. I used this quilt to practice some raw edged applique, some different free-motion quilting techniques, and some fun handwritten embroidery!! 🙂

16.5″ square, made from leftover scraps and strips using Edyta Sitar’s “Dresden Star” templates

I’m planning to use this pattern for a sunflower block exchange and decided this was a good opportunity for a sample block. This one is purposefully not sunflower colors! I was working from the scrap drawer – even the background is pieced from smaller stash scraps. The blanket stitch that holds down the flower is also the quilting.
