butter churn Block from May Chappell – Block 8 of the Old School Block of the Month

Wow! August has really crept up on me. Apple season is just a few days away – Lapacek’s Orchard opens on August 15th – so I’ve been out in the shop getting things done.  BUT – since it’s August 12th which means there is a new block for the Old School BOM 2021 today! If you missed all the beginning info you can find out all about this Block of the Month HERE.

This month we have Lee from May Chappell joining us with her Butter Churn Block!

I met Lee a few years ago when she invited me to her guild in North Carolina to give a talk and teach my Dresden Neighborhood workshop. She’s a wonderful person and an amazing quilter! She asked what I thought about using black thread on her neighborhood and I told her that if you use black thread you better be good because you won’t be able to hide your mistakes. Lee is definitely good enough to pull off black thread! Her neighborhood was incredible.

I got my hands on this pattern last night and I followed the instructions just as they were written. It went together so simply and seriously just blew my mind on how few steps were involved to make this block. This will definitely become one of my go-to blocks when I need to put together a quilt. I could see a really fun color block quilt made of all just this block!

Here are my nine Old School Sampler blocks so far (I made two Stripey Cartwheel Blocks). It’s always fun to put them all up on the wall and see what’s happening! I’m not sure on my final layout yet. I wouldn’t be surprise if I make a couple of these blocks a few times to make it a bit bigger. Or I might put the blocks all on point – or we will just have to see! That’s the fun of these sampler quilts – the possibilities are truly endless!
