Flocked Star Mini Quilt Wall Art

The Island Batik Ambassador challenge for June was “Try It.”

Try It!

This was perfect timing for me!  I also work with Thermoweb and recently they released a new product – Flock Transfer Sheets.  I knew this was a fantastic opportunity for me to see how the Flock would work on fabric.  I used scraps from a different Island batik project (which of course I can’t fully reveal until August just to mess with you all!) to create a mini star quilt.  I decided that the black flock would look really cool as an accent to the star.

Using Hot Melt Adhesive and patience I was able to add the Flock to my project.   When I first started this project I had in my head that I wanted to frame this mini quilt out in an embroidery hoop.  By doing this though I lost a bit of my flock details and a couple of the points in the star.  This made me pause and think about the embroidery hoop decision but in the end I decided to stick with my initial gut feeling and kept the hoop. I  layered my mini quilt top with Hobbs Heirloom Natural Cotton Batting and a piece of Island batik.

Once I had the mini quilt layered and hooped, I knew I wanted to add a bit of big stitch quilting.  Variegated Aurifil thread in 12 wt was the perfect solution for this.

I used both a blue and white Aurifil variegate and a black and white Aurifil variegated thread. Once I had the center star quilted I stopped and decided that the stitching was enough.  Yes – I could have stitched more but I always tend to overdo things and I liked how the quilting focused your attention on the main star.

I also love the texture the flock created in this piece.  I’ll definitely be incorporating it more in my art quilts.

If you look closely you can almost see the texture of the Island Batik fabric through the flock.  I secretly love it!

Don’t forget to take a peek at the new techniques tried by the other Island Batik Ambassadors!
