January 2020 Scrappy Nine Patch Challenge

Welcome to the resuscitated Scrap Quilt Challenge!  All the specific rules of the challenge can be found by clicking HERE.  This month (January 2020), we’re hoping you’re inspired to create a scrappy quilt based on the classic Nine-Patch block. Yes, we’re going back to basics, and it’s going to lead down a fantastic path!

How to Make a Basic Nine-Patch Block

  1. Choose a square size. In my example, I’m using 2.5″ square.

  2. Cut (9) 2.5″ squares of fabric.

  3. Sew three squares together into a row. Repeat to get three rows, each containing three squares.

  4. Sew the rows together, and you have a nine-patch block.

If you make a bunch of nine patch blocks, you can sew them all together to get a scrappy nine patch quilt!

Inspiration

Here are some fun patterns to feature nine-patch blocks you might use for this challenge (or use others, or make up your own).

Rail Fence Nine Patch Quilt Pattern, Primitive Gatherings – I love this one!  You’d have to make yours a bit bigger to fit the challenge guidelines but just think of all the scraps you could use up!

This Double Nine Patch Quilt pattern would work great with scraps!

Want go with more of a modern scrappy look?  Perhaps this book Nine-Patch Revolution by Jennifer Dick and Angela Walters is more your style.  I haven’t had a chance to look at it yet but if it’s anything like other books by Angela Walters it’s going to be a good one.

And the book Versatile Nine Patch by Joan Ford is just screaming to be utilized for this challenge!

Get Started

You have a year to start-and-finish a scrap quilt comprised mostly of the nine-patch block.  When you have a quilt finished (minimum size 45″ x 60″) link a picture below for a chance to win a prize. The deadline for nine-patch linked entries is January 15, 2021.
