Mosaic Trees Block Tutorial

I’ll admit – this  is a bit of a cheater block tutorial for the ‘Twisted Traditional’ Quilt Along.  Earlier I twisted a traditional Dutchman’s Puzzle block into the twisted Dutchman’s Trees block – which is almost the same as the traditional Mosaic I block twisted into the Mosaic Trees block – just a different orientation.  Even thought it’s a bit of a cheat it still counts – and it also shows just how different a block can look just by a small turn!  Let’s get to it!

Mosaic Tree Block Tutorial for

52 Twisted Traditional Block Quilt Along

Finished Block Size – 8.5” x 8.5”

By twisting the traditional block ‘Mosaic I’ we can create a block that is a fun twist of trees.

Cutting Instructions

Fabric A – Trees 4 – 2.5” x 4.5” (same or scrappy)

Fabric B – Background 8 – 2.5” squares 8 – 2.5” x 2.25” rectangles

Fabric C – Trunks 4 – 1” x 2.5”

Directions

Flying Geese The tree tops are made by a flying geese block.

Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of both of your fabric B squares. Place one square right sides together with your Fabric A rectangle.

Stitch right on the line you just drew.

Trim the corner off and press towards the corner fabric.

Repeat on the other side. Stitch, trim and press.

Your first ‘tree top’ is complete. Repeat with the remaining 2.5” x 4.5” rectangles of Fabric A.

Next, take your Fabric C and stitch one 2.5” x 2.25” rectangle of Fabric B to one side and the other 2.5” x 2.25” rectangle of Fabric B to the other side. Press towards the trunk. Repeat to make four 2.5” x 4.5” ‘trunk’ rectangles.

Layout your eight rectangles in the orientation shown above and sew together.

And with that…your ‘Mosaic Tree’ block is finished!

SIDENOTE times 2!

The ‘Traditional’ Mosaic I Block would be put together like this…with 8 flying geese blocks.

And here are the two blocks side by side!  Dutchman’s Trees on the left and Mosaic Trees on the right. – – –   Get your FREE printable PDF of this block by heading to my craftsy store.  Don’t wait too long…after a month (10/3), the PDF will be $1.
