Mother of Dragons–a Game of Quilts Challenge Quilt

Yesterday, I share with you the ‘Blood, Stone, Steel & Fire’ Quilt I made for the Game of Quilts and today I’m going to share with you my ‘Mother of Dragons’ quilt.

These challenges were super tricky for me.  We purchased bundles of fabric with four fat quarters in them and that is all we were allowed to use.  Now – we could embellish these fabrics … to a point but they still needed to be recognizable as the fabric from the bundle we purchased.  Have you ever seen me a make a quilt with just four fat quarters of solid fabric?! 

The ‘Mother of Dragons’ quilt came to me right away.  Once I figured out that I would converge the background I knew that I needed to applique an amazing dragon. 

I used Heat N Bond Lite from Therm O Web to fuse my dragon applique onto the quilt.  Once I had the design cut out and before I ironed it onto the quilt top I took Shiva Oil Paintstiks to color the edges of the dragon.  Since I used the same dark grey for the dragon as I did for the background I somehow needed to create definition between the two – the

Paintstiks did just the trick!

I had so much fun free motion quilting this piece as well!  I roughly outlined the dragon in a teal Aurifil

thread.  For the rest of the quilt I used a florescent orange thread to create a flame design over the rest of the quilt. 

And to finish this piece off – I faced the binding on the quilt.
