Quilting Gallery Mug Rug Swap

Because I’m always looking for fun things to do, sew and participate in I signed up for the recent Mug Rug Swap hosted by Michelle of the Quilting Gallery.

It was quite fun to come up with mug rugs for my ‘partner’ although a bit stressful I must admit.  The quilting level of my partener was ‘expert’ so it made me a bit more stressed out about making it completely perfect.  And the only fabric requirement was no white (I did use a little for the eyes and snow) and that she liked Moda Fabrics.  I also have to admit I’m really terrible and knowing which designer designed my fabric and where it came from.  I’m a completely ‘do I feel it in my gut’ fabric buyer.  Also – correct me if I’m wrong – there’s quite a variety of ‘styles’ in Moda fabrics…it was definitely something I contemplated for awhile.  In the end I made her ‘Kim Style’ mug rugs.  There is at least a little bit of Moda Fabric on them…

For the swap we made two mug rugs – each tutorial from The Patchsmith.  Above is my version of ‘Two Owls.

And here is my version of Winter Birdhouse.  I was trying to do some decorative stitching under the bird but it just wasn’t looking right – so I added a bit of fun owl printed cotton tape that not only covered it up but also add a bit of extra whimsy.

I haven’t heard from my partner yet but hopefully she likes her little mug rugs.

Be sure you check out all the beautiful mug rugs made by looking at the Flickr group.
