Now that the challenge of the week is over, I thought I'd share more behind the story of my quilt entry "They've Gone to Plaid."
First - I needed to make a plan. Turns out I have a ridiculous number of patterns from PenAndPaperPatterns in my collection just waiting to be used. Quite a few of them had a lot of possibility but I decided to go with Garden Snails. I thought plaid shells would be fantastic!

I had a bunch of fableism scraps left over from piecing the quilt above for my daughter so I decided to piece them together and see what happens.

Once I had the pieces built for the scrappy plaid snail shells, it was time to make the rest.

I used a fun plaid from my collection for the snail bodies and then a hand-dyed brown/blue fabric for the background.

Next up - it was time to do the quilting! I revealed in my last Project QUILTING piece that I have rediscovered my love of free motion quilting! I challenge myself to do this again. I refer to my "365 Free Motion Quilting Designs" book by Leah Day (I linked to the calendar because the book is now super expensive) to figure out designs.

Once i had the shells done I knew I had to do something even more fun so I gave each snail a face! and Trisha gave them a name. First up is a Happy Archibald.

Next is Annoyed Merle.

And then we have Discombobulated Percival.

And finally we have Sad Face Carlisle.
The last challenge for this quilt was to come up with a name. I immediately thought of the movie Space Balls when they going into Ludicrous speed and the quote is "They've Gone to Plaid." I knew that had to be the name since snails "going to plaid" is something that would never happen with them being slow.

Once again, Project QUILTING inspired me to make a quilt that brought me joy and calmness. Being distracted in these trying times is not a bad option. I hope you enjoyed the story behind my piece.
The third Project QUILTING challenge will be posted right here on my website on Sunday, February 1st at Noon, CST. I hope you decide to join in the fun!
