Tiny House in a Painted Forest Quilt– a Finish

Earlier this month I announced that I was a Island Batik Ambassador for 2019!  Along with that honor comes responsibilities which happens to include a month challenge. I know, I know – I have to finish a challenge quilt?  I hate challenges!  If there was someway to right in sarcasm I would be doing that – I LOVE challenges!  If this is your first time on my blog – you can see what I mean by heading over to my Project QUILTING page.

The Challenge – Magnificent Minis

The February challenge was pretty broad, in fact it is “Magnificent Minis”.  The only rule was that the finished quilt had to be less than 24” square.  I can definitely handle that!  I started to play around with the challenge when the “Bigger than a Breadbox” Project QUILTING Challenge was posted.  In the end, I finished a different quilt for the challenge but I had my start!

My Process:

I have been drooling over the Painted Forest Quilt Patter by Scott Hansen of Blue Nickel Studios for a really long time.  I thought this would be a great opportunity to give it a try!

Snow-Berry-Stack

I decided to mainly use the Snowberry Stack I had received.  These are all precuts in 10” squares.  It turned out to be the perfect sized precuts to use for this pattern since it was easy to make the trees scrappy looking.  I picked out three contrasting colors from the five inch strip packs I received for the trunks, branches and house.

Island Batik Painted Tree

I used purples and blues for the leaves of the trees and found the lightest fabrics for the backgrounds.  Those ended up being white and really light purple. After the first painted tree was done I knew this was the project I needed to do.

Painted Forest with Island Batik Fabrics

This mini quilt includes three Painted Trees in different sizes. The background was pieced in an improv method to keep with the scrappy look.  I felt like there was too much white space under the trees so I thought I’d add in a fun tiny house.

A running deer applique was also considered but in the end I decided for once that less is more.

Once I was happy with the design on the quilt, I basted it with Hobbs Heirloom Premium Cotton batting and backed it with a neutral Island Batik fabric.

aurifil thread

I chose to quilt the piece with 50 wt Aurifil thread in colors 4648 for the house and tree and 4600 for the background.

Quilting small quilts on my Bernina is one of my favorite things to do.  I love to play around with free motion quilting.

I’m not the best at it but I find if you don’t stress about it turning out perfectly it ends up not looking too bad.

(oh – and A LOT of practice too!)  Sometimes the small little details make the biggest differences.

I created a scrappy binding from the 10-inch squares of the Snowberry stack for the final scrappy touch.
