Clue 3–Project QUILTING Mystery Quilt Along

Happy Day 3 of the Project QUILTING Mystery Quilt Along.  Quick note before we get to the third clue.  It was brought to my attention that I had a typo on Clue 2.  It’s fixed now but if you pieced your clue together before 3pm CST yesterday my apologies.  You should sew (5) sets of six 2.5” square strips (not the 6 sets of 5 … sorry!).  Hopefully this is a quick fix for you and you’re ready for the next set of clues!

Make some fabric

make scrappy fabric

Take the scraps of Fabric 2 (red) and sew them together whichever way you can to create fabric.

sew together fabric bits

I start by grabbing four “chunks” of fabric and adding strips to their sides.

From there I just kept adding more and more bits of fabric.

six 2.5 inch squares and four 3 inch squares

Just keep adding more fabrics on until you have created large enough pieces to cut (6) 2.5” squares of scrappy red and (4) 3.0” squares of scrappy red.  If you cut into your pieces of made fabric and realize that you don’t have enough to get the 10 pieces you need … just make more fabric!

eight half square triangles

Pair the 3.0” squares of scrappy red with 3.0” background fabric to make (8) 2.5” Half Square Triangles. (Refer to Clue 2 for my half square triangle making method).

Sew together a Heart

Layout the 2.5” half square triangles, 2.5” scrappy red blocks and the 2.5” background fabrics in the order shown above.

Sew these squares together.  Press seams opposite each other to help with nesting your corners.

add borders

Once you sew the heart add a four square strip of background fabric to the top and bottom of the heart.

You now have one small section of the mystery quilt complete!

So that’s it – Clue 3!  Have fun and be sure to post your progress on instagram using the hashtag #PQMysteryQAL.
