When the Project QUILTING Challenge Bigger Than a Bread Box was posted I knew it was time for me to get one of my February projects done. I had three different challenges I had to complete – an Magnificent Mini for Island Batik, a Column or Landscape quilt for the Prairie Heritage Quilt Show and a Blue/White quilt for the Prairie Heritage Quilt Show. I started each of these three projects during the week of this challenge. In the end I was “feeling” the blue and white challenge the most and decided that was the one I would finish.
I started by cutting up different strips of white and blue fabrics. I sewed them together randomly in an “unscripted” method.
I did purposefully piece a few half square triangles, four patches and flying geese blocks to add to the mix.
I like to mix in tradition with random just to create bits of surprise.
It wasn’t long until I had a decent size mini quilt together that was bigger than a breadbox.
I added a border onto the sides to give me a little leeway to trim down after it was quilted. It wasn’t quite there yet so I let it sit on my design wall overnight before I started to quilt. In my dreams I remembered that I had purchased some snowflakes from Edyta Sitar when she had visited the guild. In the morning I rushed downstairs and searched the drawers to see if I could find them and to see if they were actually blue!
Yes!!!! These were the perfect final touch! I fused them down in a way that looked pleasing to me.
I used aurifil 4655 and 2758 to quilt this piece.
After I stitched the snowflakes down I decided to play around a bit with the fancy stitches on my new Bernina using the darker Aurifil 2785 thread. I free motion meandered with Aurfil 4655 thread to get the background securely quilted.
I bound my “slo-flake” mini quilt with dark blue and it was finished!
I’m thrilled with the result of random joy covered in gorgeous snowflakes!
“Slo-Flake” has been turned in and it will be displayed at the Sun Prairie Heritage Quilt Show on March 24th – 26th.
